Lake Natron
Located in the Ngorongoro district of Arusha, near the Tanzania-Kenya border, Lake Natron stands out from all other salty lakes. Fed by the mineral-rich Ewaso Nyiro River from central Kenya, this lake has a pH of over 12, making it highly alkaline. With no outlet, the lake relies on evaporation during the dry season, leaving behind a mix of sodium carbonate and baking soda, which increases the water's alkalinity, making it one of the deadliest lakes on earth.
But don’t let that scare you—its beauty lies in its uniqueness. Lake Natron is a paradise for birdwatchers and nature lovers. The lake shores support a variety of plants, and it’s home to over 2.5 million lesser flamingos that feed on the pinkish-reddish algae on the lake's surface. While it has fewer wildlife species than other parks, you might spot zebras, ostriches, oryx, and golden jackals. There's something thrilling about getting close to such a unique water body, especially during sunrise, with the majestic Ol Doinyo Lengai ‘Mountain of God’ in the backdrop, it's an experience you'll never forget.
